Acute Care Surgery
2016 Course Overview

This will be the 35th anniversary for the Point/Counterpoint meeting.  The 2016 program will be both informative and interactive.  This will mark the final year that LD Britt, MD, MPH, FACS will serve as Program Director.  During this transition year, Thomas Scalea, MD, FACS will serve as co-program director.  He will assume the full responsibility in 2017.

There will be a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art management paradigms, ongoing controversies, and cutting-edge innovations that cover the full spectrum of Acute Care Surgery.  It will continue to have its trademark format – point/counterpoint.  A state-of-the-art lecture will be given each day by a world renowned expert on that particular topic.  This includes the Charles Wolferth, Jr., MD, Memorial Lecture, which will be given by Ronald Stewart, MD, FACS, on Monday.  In addition, the first day (emergency general surgery) will be dedicated to specific management challenges in emergency general surgery.  That evening, there will be a welcome reception.  The second day (trauma) will focus on specific management issues in trauma and the related controversies.  Peggy Knudson, MD, FACS will be the State-of-the-Art Lecturer this day.  The third day (critical care) will focus on cutting-edge critical care management and underscore the progress that has been.  Timothy Buchman, MD, PhD, FACS, will be the State-of-the-Art Lecturer for this session.

The curriculum of the Point/Counterpoint course will have a broad appeal to both acute care surgeons and general surgeons, along with other specialty surgeons – including emergency physicians and intensivists, as well as nurses, paramedics, and others who actively participate with a high performance team.   The Point/Counterpoint guarantee is to have expert faculty, to facilitate meaningful intellectual exchange, and to enhance the overall educational experience of every participant.  The resolution for each topic discussed will be completely based on evidence.  A course syllabus will include a synopsis of each presentation.  This information will be distributed at registration.
